When I started my journey at Sex Coach U, it had been a very long time since I had been a student. This meant getting myself back into a rhythm that I hadn’t tapped into for many years. I realized pretty quickly that I needed to relearn how to study as a sex coaching student.
I have always been the kind of person to just plow forward, so that’s what I did. I devoted as much time as I could to reading the articles, watching the lectures, attending as many of the live events listed as possible, watching the media, and completing the study guides.
Everything was going great, until suddenly, it wasn’t. I was stuck. I hit the proverbial wall. I found myself struggling to get through the articles, finding time to watch the media, and to listen to one more lecture. It felt like I was getting nowhere fast.
If you find yourself nodding your head “yes” to the above statements, you are not alone. Many of us have experienced what I call “mountain climber syndrome.” It’s that feeling that you have been climbing for ages, but when you look up, there still seems to be an entire mountain left to climb.
Now that I have recently graduated from the program, I’d like to pass along a few tools that I used along the way that helped me get unstuck and keep moving forward.
Tools for Your Sex Coaching Student Toolbox
Following are 11+ tools and strategies for regaining your momentum and enthusiasm as a Sex Coach U student. Pick and choose what appeals to you or try them all and see what works.
Attend a Rendezvous
Rendezvous are held three times a month at different times of the week, and different times of the day. If you can do so, I highly recommend popping in as often as you can. Rendezvous offers the opportunity to ask questions about the curriculum, connect with others that may also be struggling, and be with like-minded people. It is a great way to meet fellow students and engage with SCU faculty.
Connect with fellow students
Whether it is your study buddy or someone you feel a connection with at SCU, connecting with other students can provide a nice nudge to keep moving forward. Set up a Zoom chat, talk on the phone, exchange text messages, DMs, or emails. It is a great way to bounce ideas off each other, discuss what you’ve covered in your studies, be “accountabilibuddies,” practice coaching, or just make a new friend. I am eternally grateful for the connections I have made at SCU and the role they have played in helping me move forward.
Take a mental break
Sometimes our minds get so full of information it feels like we are completely overloaded. It is easy to get so immersed in our studies that it ends up being all we think about. If you can, try taking some time away from your studies. Hit pause on taking in any new information for however long you need to rest your brain. Do something different for a few days that helps clear your head. When you feel ready, ease back into the flow.
Check out Book Club
Held once a month, the SCU Book Club is a lovely space to share thoughts, talk about great books about sex, and laugh with your colleagues. The best part is that you don’t even need to read the book to attend. You can just show up and join in on some fabulous conversation.
Connect with your advisor
The advisors are highly knowledgeable about the curriculum and are also coaches. A quick email exchange or a short video chat with your advisor can be just the kickstart you need to get back on track. I benefited greatly from meeting with my advisor one-on-one when I felt really stuck.
Attend BOSS Offerings
If you are also part of the Business of Sexuality Specialists (BOSS) program, the Inner and Outer Game group coaching sessions are yet another way to connect with others, recharge your brain, and get some spot coaching.
Business Co-working sessions happen every Monday for an hour. It is another great way to start off the week, and to set the tone for the rest of the week. Co-working offers a relaxed, fun space where you can plan your week, work on coursework, clean your space, or just “eat those frogs.” Not only that, at the end of the session, everyone celebrates what has been accomplished in that time.
Utilize the Facebook Group
The Facebook Group is a great place to connect with others. There you have the space to ask questions, share interesting articles, get advice, give advice, offer support, network, see what’s going on, or respond to the SCU posts. Facebook may not be everyone’s jam, and that’s cool, but it does offer an additional space to feel that community vibe.
Celebrate your wins
Big or small, celebrate your wins! Finished a section of the study guide? Have a mini dance party. Read that article you had been putting off? Have some of that fancy chocolate you’ve been saving. Finally found time to watch the media? Reward yourself with a trip to your favorite place. Whatever you like to do to celebrate, make sure to add it into your study routine.
Find a support partner
We all have that one person, sometimes more, that is/are just fascinated by what we are learning at SCU. Provided they are willing—consent is important—your support partner is the person you get to take all that information you are learning and then teach it to them. Not only does this give you the chance to process, it also helps you retain the information. Sometimes getting all that information out in the open keeps it from taking up space and overwhelming your brain. This could be a partner, a best friend, a parent/caregiver, or anyone else outside of SCU. Super bonus points when they are also your biggest cheerleader and help you celebrate your wins!
Check out the Peer Coaching Practice Sessions
Back when I was in high school Chemistry, I would look forward to lab days. Lab days were the days we would get to mess around with chemicals and see actual chemistry in action. Peer coaching is like that. You get to take all the skills you are learning and put them into practice. It is a great way to remind you of our “why” and reenergize your drive to complete your studies.
Have fun
We all know that sex is not serious business. Learning about it doesn’t have to be either. Have fun with your studies! Find ways to make it playful and joyful.
Keep on Climbing
It’s completely normal to feel stuck in your studies, but you aren’t alone. Whether you are just starting, halfway through, or approaching the summit, know that you have a team of fellow mountain climbers right alongside you. You also have a great faculty and SCU graduates cheering you on from the top. As you continue to move through your studies, using these tools can help you maintain forward momentum.
For me, the best part is knowing that these tools, plus the connections I have made at SCU, will be there long after I graduate. So those moments when I feel a little stuck in my business someday, I know that I can pull from my toolbox and lean on my fellow SCU colleagues for support.
