Today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned the landmark Roe v Wade decision in 1973 that guaranteed a person’s right to an abortion. Today, the Supreme Court dealt a vicious blow to women’s rights, privacy, and the ability to control their own destiny. As of today’s decision, people in 13 states will lose their right to a safe abortion within 30 days (for some, this ban goes into effect instantly). In many of the states that have passed or are considering passing an abortion ban, no exceptions are made for rape, incest, or the health and life of the woman.
U.S. President Joe Biden, in a speech he gave today on this topic, said “I believe Roe v. Wade was the correct decision as a matter of constitutional law and application of the fundamental right to privacy and liberty and matters of family and personal autonomy.”
As a global sexological training and certification organization, we at Sex Coach U are vehemently opposed to such restrictions of a woman’s right to choose when and whether to bear children or to terminate a pregnancy. We stand for a woman’s, a family’s, a human’s right to determine their own sexual destiny and health. This abhorrent politicized decision is the result of white supremacy, and racist, bigoted, and misogynistic religious conservative views that do nothing to uphold fundamental American values, or the health and safety of the American people.
This decision will have a powerful impact on the rights and freedoms of people seeking reproductive care around the world. As an organizational member of the World Association for Sexual Health, Sex Coach U is dedicated to preserving sexual health and sexual rights for all. We uphold their Declaration of Sexual Rights.
We may also see threats to other sexual, reproductive, and relationship freedoms. As Justice Thomas stated in his concurring opinion, the right to privacy in one’s bedroom in terms of your sexual choices, the right to same-sex marriage, the right to contraception (and possibly more) are now fair game and could be struck down, as well.
This is the beginning of the erosion of sexual health and freedoms across the board. Dr. Patti Britton, CEO and co-founder of Sex Coach U, says, “This is a dark day in the history of the United States and the world. The Supreme Court’s decision signals a dangerous move toward the elimination of personal privacy, our guaranteed rights under the U.S. Constitution, and ultimately sexual wellness. Today’s SCOTUS decision marks the demonization and criminalization of sex itself.”
As sexuality educators, sex coaches, and sex positivity advocates, it is incumbent upon us to resist this attack on our sexual rights and freedoms. We must stand up and make our voices heard. Make sure you’re informed, get involved with a local abortion rights organization, volunteer at Planned Parenthood, donate to organizations and groups who are working tirelessly to secure and protect our rights, and vote in every single election, big and small, to ensure we have political representatives who will do their part to stand for privacy, personal autonomy, and sexual health and freedom for all.
